English Applied Learning Programme (ALP)
The English Applied Learning Programme (ALP) connects classroom learning with real-life applications and therefore allows students to better appreciate the connection with post-secondary education and industries.
The school endeavours to develop students to express themselves with clarity, confidence and a strong sense of purpose to serve. To this end, we will provide opportunities for advocacy beyond the school environment through Values-in-Action projects and partnering with the Good Shepherd Order, which we believe will allow the girls to apply the skill, in the real-world context, for the greater good of the community.
At Marymount Convent School (MCS), the Talent Development Framework provides for an enriched curriculum, through which the school seeks to develop the Marymount Girl in her areas of passion and strength in various disciplines. The ALP will focus on the language discipline, developing and honing effective communicators, thereby supporting our school vision (Ladies of Compassion, Eloquence and Intellect, with God as our Shepherd) and mission (Empowering Lives, Restoring Rights, and Upholding Dignity).
With these in mind, the English Applied Learning Programme @ MCS aims to:
-
Develop Marymount Girls who communicate with clarity and confidence
-
Enable Marymount Girls to be advocates for good causes
Our ALP programmes include:
-
the use of the Moo-o platform to create an authentic learning experience as students become the story characters in real-time while providing opportunities for collaboration and creation with special focus on reading fluency and speaking skills.
-
Live @MCS - a platform for ALL students to speak to the school on a topic of their interest.
-
English Language Learning Journeys - these learning journeys have been specially curated to align with the themes covered during English class. In Semester 1, the P1 students made their way to Jacob Ballas Children's Garden to be exposed to outdoor education while the P2 students rolled up their sleeves to learn to make roti prata.
-
Talent Development Programme - There are other platforms for identified students who show potential in verbal or written communication. These include creative writing, writing journalistic news articles for the school's newsletter, emceeing for school events, opportunities to represent school for competitions such as the Royal Commonwealth Essay Competition, Plain English Speaking Awards (PESA), Mythos (storytelling), Wits & Words.
We endeavour to develop students to express themselves with clarity, confidence and a strong sense of purpose to serve. We hope to continue this journey of developing ladies of compassion, who use their eloquence for the greater good of the community.
